This is perhaps the world's only salt produced using only geothermal power, evaporating the crystals using the heat from natural geysers. All electricity used at the facility come from a nearby geothermal power-plant.
This saltworks was established by Bjorn Steinar Jonsson, Yngvi Eiriksson, and Garðar Stefansson: three self-described foodies that brought back the 240 years old tradition of salt making in Iceland.
The salt is produced in a small bay in the peninsula of Reykjanes (an aspiring Geopark applying for membership in the European Geopark network). The peninsula has an incredible diversity of volcanic and geothermal activity and is the only place in the world where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is visible above sea level).
Ingredients: Sea salt
I first had Icelandic flake salt in Iceland which I bought from the Blue Lagoon shop. When I ran out, I was so happy that The Meadow carried some as well. I love it and just reordered the 1lb bag!
Really very enjoyable
This salt is wonderful on summer fruits...A great value. I highly recommend.
I was heartbroken when I discovered fear the NYC Meadow closed. So I immediately ordered online, including another jar of this Icelandic Flake - one of my top five Meadow salts. The taste is crisp, and the flake texture adds to the culinary experience. I love this salt on just about anything, it’s probably the most versatile one in my arsenal.
This salt is a great complement for any and all salads, especially during these summer months!
