The organic beans that Bixby & Co. imports from the Dominican Republic are grown in the El Cibao region in the providence of Duarte at an elevation of 100 - 350 meters. Cacao cultivation covers about 10% of DR's land area and the El Cibao Region is at the center of the cacao cultivation. There are approximately 180 small growers that are supported by Gualberto Acebey Torrejon and Adriano Acebey Terrejon, the owners of OKO Caribe, an independent buyer of cacao, that maintains close relationships with the farmers through technical training, in sustainable growing practices and organic certification, but most importantly with good prices for the crop.

Founded by Kate & Donna McAleer a mother-daughter team in late 2011, Bixby & Co. crafts organic and non gmo chocolate confectionery products. In 2017, Bixby & Co. became the first bean to bar or craft chocolate maker in the state of Maine.
