Shawn Askinosie, a former defense lawyer in Springfield, Missouri, started Askinosie Chocolate in 2007.
His company rapidly became the highest standard for ethical cacao sourcing and crafting in the United States. Askinosie has been promoting and creating an impressive amount of programs to solidify sustainable and deeply collaborative relationships with the cacao farmers, helping them not only to be an actual financial partner to the company, but also to reshape the economy of their farms and surrounding villages.
Shawn Askinosie travels personally to every meeting with the farmers to ensure a most critical conversation on the development of the farming techniques and to share every aspect of the farm's economical development on the market (all of the bookkeeping is translated in each farm's language by a local translator to maintain the highest level of transparency).
Askinosie Chocolate represents all of the noblest aspects of contemporary bean to bar chocolate crafting in the United States, and it is a constant source of inspiration for new chocolate artisans and supporters (aka chocolate eaters).
Would buy this bar again.
We just ordered a second bar
I stopped by the store to browse, and ended up buying Askinosie chocolate for myself and my boyfriend. We had some this week and I'm really happy with my purchase. It's just delicious. The sustainable package is a nice touch. I was also very pleased with the lady who helped me. I forget her name, but she pointed me to the dark chocolates and helped me choose between this one and another I was eyeing. She told me the other had a bit of a drier taste, this one had more hints of fruit. I then knew what to go for. I will definitely go back to pick up more chocolate.
We’ve tried several varieties of Askinosie, and while all of them are delicious, the Tanzania is definitely our favorite. It has a great balance of flavors, and isn’t as bitter as some dark chocolates.
